Tested reasoning, applied honestly and fairly to every family.

How Trea works

Trea is direct about what her clients are going through. Parental separation is one of the hardest things a family can experience, and by the time people reach her, they are often anxious, exhausted and bracing for a process they don't understand. So, she explains it. What's happening, what comes next, what will be done with what they share. Plainly and honestly, from the first conversation.

No assumptions, tested reasoning

Her assessments are built on hypothesis testing, not assumptions. She explores every reasonable explanation for what's happening in a family, tests her own reasoning against the evidence, and shows that reasoning in her reports. The court may weigh her conclusions however it sees fit, but it will always be able to see exactly how she reached them.

She also stays curious. If something comes up that she doesn't know enough about, she'll say so, and then she'll go and learn about it. Twenty-eight years in, she still treats every family as something to understand rather than something to categorise.

A fair go for everyone

Everyone Trea works with gets the same care and the same rigour, regardless of what they look like, how they speak, where they come from, or whether they have money. She is deliberate about examining her own biases and how they might affect her work, because objectivity isn't a credential you earn once. It's a discipline you practise every day.

Being heard

Trea knows that walking into an assessment is hard. So, she checks in throughout: whether there's anything else you wanted to raise, whether you need a break, whether something occurred to you after the last conversation that you wish you'd said. Things come to mind in the car park. She plans for that.

What she wants, at the end of the process, is for every parent to feel they were listened to, treated with respect, and given a genuine opportunity to say their piece. You may not agree with every conclusion she reaches. But you will have been heard.

Children at the centre

Through it all, one thing stays fixed: the children. Their needs, their safety and their developmental stage sit at the centre of every assessment, every recommendation and every conversation. Children in Trea's work are a source of insight, never the ones carrying the weight of the decision. They choose how much or how little to share, every time.

On time, every time

The family law system runs on deadlines, and families in limbo shouldn't wait longer than they must. Trea works to timeframes and delivers on them.

Dr Trea Sanson-Fisher

Rare in the field.
Rarer still in family law.

Few psychologists in Australia hold specialist endorsements in both clinical and forensic psychology. Fewer still have spent over two decades inside the family court system as a Family Consultant and Court Child Expert. Trea has done both, and it shapes everything: assessments grounded in clinical understanding, reports written for how courts actually read them, and a process that treats every family with the same rigour and respect.

Child Impact Assessment

A focused assessment used early in proceedings, to help parents and the court make interim decisions about children.

Family Reports

A comprehensive assessment used later in proceedings, ahead of final hearings, when long-term parenting arrangements need to be decided.

Child Consultation

A way to bring children's voices into mediation, so parents and solicitors don't lose sight of what their children actually need.

Specialist Supervision

Clinical and forensic supervision for psychologists who find themselves navigating the family law system.
